A Rainy Day with Pirates….Friday 5th July

Well I must confess to staying up last night watching the election results….it all started to get exciting about 2.00am as more constituencies finished counting the ballots and announced their result. (For my American family and friends this involves large teams of volunteers from both and/or all parties counting paper ballots as Britain doesn’t use voting machines.) The last election count I followed so closely was 1997, last time the government switched from Tory to Labour. Happily I am now represented by a Labour MP. I personally would prefer the Green Party but at least they got 4 MPs this year and there are 6 Quakers of various political parties now in Parliament.

Having heard good things about the Maritime Museum we saved it until Friday as the weather forecast was rain…all day….which it did. So off we went walking down new to us streets to the Falmouth Dock.

The Maritime Museum is modern mix of history of boats, and all things associated with shipping in Falmouth’s history. A big part of that is the Packet Ship for the postal service around the British empire and rest of the world. But the highlight for me was the display about the myth. Of the pirates and how it developed from history to modern literature, digital games, and movies. The actual average pirate career was two years and their most successful period was around 1716-1724, quite a brief epoch.

And the boats on display were primarily smaller boats and a display on the history of boats from floating logs to present day They also have a boat workshop to train designers and builders of both traditional boats and modern boats.

And as we were in Cornwall we elected to have a Cornish Cream Tea for our lunch, vey nice fresh scone, strawberry jam and clotted cream.

The museum sounds interesting especially the tale of Blackbeard. Cornish cream tea also looks good!
