Thursday 4th July – Escape to Trelissick Garden

Today was election day for all four countries of the United Kingdom. We had mailed our applications for postal votes in the day after the election date was announced. So just before leaving home and two days before the deadline to organise a proxy vote, I discovered our applications had not arrived at Birmingham Election Office. So we had a bit of a mad scramble to find a neighbour who was planning to vote in person at our polling station, emailed our applications for a proxy vote, and liaised with a friend to cast our votes for us. So we were pleased not to think about the election today.

Instead we took a boat ride up the Fal River to visit Trelissick Garden, a National Trust property comprising a private dock, an amazing garden and a big house on top of a hill looking out over the river.

The boat leaves from the city pier to go up river to Trelissick and then onto Malpas.

There is a long windy walk up from the dock to the entrance hut and then even longer walk up through the gardens to the house, Tregothnan, and standard NT facilities but with the addition of the gallery of the Cornwall Craft Council.

I am not a gardener nor a plant enthusiast but I have tried to identify some of the plants using the garden’s guide and PlantSnap app. So I am hoping that my more knowledgeable friends (like Wendy & Michael) will add corrections in the comments section.

The garden had an adventure writing activity for children with signs around the garden and a leaflet with spaces for children to write their own adventure store.

There were six boards of instructions in all.

We didn’t get to see all the areas or viewpoints but it was a lovely day out in a very peaceful garden.

What a lovely garden. Some of the plants look exotic but I suppose it is the Cornish Riviera! I’ve never been there -maybe we will be in that part of Cornwall one day so we can visit. Willow would have enjoyed making up a story with princesses and fairies and unicorns and Zach would have passed on that activity. He’d be climbing trees and getting lost! Looks like you had good weather.
