Coastal Circular Buses -Tuesday 2nd July

Today we explored Falmouth. But first Judith went out for her 7am walk around Kimberley Park sharing it with a number of dog walkers.

After breakfast we set off down Killigrew Road walking down the long hill to the Moor, central bus stop. We got there early and we dropped into the Sue Ryder charity shop to see if they had fleeces as it is chilly and windy. Luck was with us and we each got a fleece in our favourite colours – mint green for me and two tone purple for Judith. When we came out the 67 Coastal Circular pulled up. It goes from the town centre around some streets then down to the harbour and around the point to Pendennis Castle.

Route map for bus 67 Coastal Circular

We start at the top of the map nearest the river and then rode around to Pendennis Point at the lower right.

The bus is a small 20 seater with one wheelchair space. The driver was helpful and friendly. We got off below the castle and walked up the long drive to the gate. The castle is part of the English Heritage Trust, and as we have annual subscriptions entry is free. We also got a discount on our lunch. The castle was built, or ordered to be built, by Henry VIII to keep the French and Spanish out of the Fal River..There is another castle on the opposite shore of the estuary, and the canons of each fort could shot half way across….so they could attack the incoming boats without fear of an “friendly fire” accidents.

We enjoyed lunch in their cafe. then we walked back down the castle drive to all along the Castle Cliff road to Castle beach and then on the front to Gyllyngvase beach, The flowers and plants on the border of the road we lovely.

We caught the 67 bus for a lift down to Swannpool beach and nature reserve where it turns to return to the Moor bus stop. We meant to go back to the town but the driver said the beach cafe made the best ice creams so we got off and joined the queue.

We sat in the sun and enjoyed our “Hedgehogs” of vanilla ice cream covered in Cornish clotted cream and honey roast hazelnuts very much. The day and weather had changed from the morning totally. Blue skies, warm sun and a beach felt more like a summer holiday than shopping for a fleece in a local charity shop.
