Now that the we are beginning to come out of isolation and can meet up outdoors in larger groups the local guild members met up for our biennial dyer’s picnic in Sarah Cage’s garden. Eleven of us made it with some visitors joining in.
Sarah had natural dyes cooking in pots on camp stoves, and Rachel gave her demonstration of acid dyeing to create self-stripping yarn for sock knitting. I took along some yarn cakes of various sizes to experiment with dying yarn wound into cakes rather than straight lengths.

Sock yarn dyeing for a four colour strip.
The yarn cakes are dyeing in ice cream tubs having been pre-soaked in vinegar and water to open the fibre. I didn’t really pre-plan the colours but just had a play to see what happens as my first try.
